KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Saturday local businesses and volunteers came together to help make the holidays a little bit brighter for some kids in the metro.

Saturday in the Northland, volunteers from the Platte County Health Department and local churches are teaming up to provide hope this holiday season.

Haircuts, family photos, Christmas presents, food, free dental work and medical exams, coats blankets, food and more are all available free of charge for families in need.

But volunteers at the event said the day of hope should last well past Saturday.

"We want people to know this is more than just a handout, it is a hand up. So we want people to leave this day with hope in their life from this day forward," Mary Jo Vernon with the Platte County Health Department said. "We want people to be linked with services like from the health department, from dental care to medical care. The churches want to have a relationship with people so that in these downturn times when they're depressed or feel like there is no hope, we want them to know that there's a lot of help out there, that from this day forward we will be there for them."
